Steve Murakishi
Artist Biography
Steve Murakishi is a reformed installation artist. For over 20 years, Murakishi was an Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Print Media department, a graduate program at Cranbrook Academy of Art; in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
In Boston, he partnered with his wife to run a small family retail business; specializing in “New American Handmade Crafts”. He is the recipient of two Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Grant and an Arts Midwest Individual Artist grant. Murakishi has also received a National Endowment for the Arts, individual artist grant. He joined Shepherd Maudsleigh studio in 2021
Artist Statement
The nugget of my work is about identity politics and the poetics of death. The world has always been a leveraged existence. The reflection I try to mirror is an image that reaches for broken conclusions, images of slippage and the distortion of self-hood. I think about the inequality that is so easily rationalized away.
