Ilana Saraf
Artist Statement
My creative practice celebrates the beauty of handmade textiles. I build every element – dying, screen printing, stitching, and quilting – forming fine art wall hangings, Jewish ritual objects, and functional pieces for home. I paint with stitches, inspired by the spontaneous surprises that surface as I layer, cut, stitch, and piece, while exploring texture, light, color, pattern, and line. I construct works of art that are meant to be worn and used, made by hand . . . my hands.
Invoking the connection between human stories and visual art, I also design unique memory pieces from garments and fabrics with personal significance, transforming cherished artifacts into new forms that honor their origins while creating contemporary meaning. These distinctive pieces explore the intimate connections between cloth, memory, ceremony, and history.
In our mass-produced world, objects made with intention and by hand hold special significance. Whether someone is setting their table with hand-printed placemats, or wrapping themselves in a prayer shawl embedded with memories, each piece carries the tactile joy of connection to others and the natural world.
